Varun Chakravarthy 2.0 impresses Aakash Chopra: He is bowling slow in the air

Former batter Aakash Chopra heaped praise on Varun Chakravarthy for his match-winning spell against England on Wednesday, January 22. Chakravarthy got the wickets of Jos Buttler, Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone to finish with figures of 4-0-23-3. It was on the back of his spell that India restricted the Three Lions to 132, after which they went on to win by seven wickets.

Chopra said that India have started trusting Chakravarthy to bowl in the powerplay after he made his comeback to the national setup last year. Chopra said that the spinner has bowled slow through the air, making the batters generate all the power in their strokes and creating trouble for them.

“Since the time Varun Chakaravarthy has come back, he has started bowling in the powerplay. He came and bowled the sixth over and his bowling was incredible. The thing I am liking the most is that he is bowling slow in the air. He is happy to just flight the ball,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“Pace is a huge marker in my opinion, because nowadays, spinners become fast as soon as they get hit and fast bowlers become slow. If a spinner bowls with confidence, he goes slow. You go slow even if you are hit for a six unless you are a Rashid Khan. His bowling style is different. He will bowl fast. However, Varun Chakaravarthy is not Rashid,” Chopra added.
